Province and First Nations work together for safe and sustainable mushroom harvest

FRASER LAKE–The Province is working with Nadleh Whut’en, Stellaten First Nation and Nak’azdli Whut’en to protect and restore burnt areas and support First Nations as they monitor the season’s mushroom harvest.

The burnt areas were caused by the 2018 Shovel Lake and Island Lake wildfire, and with an anticipated influx of individual mushroom harvesters and commercial buyers, the Province is taking steps to ensure that mushroom harvesting in the region is done responsibly, without causing further damage.

The Nadleh Whut’en and Stellat’en communities developed a management plan for harvesting areas around their communities. They encourage responsible, safe and low-impact mushroom harvesting.

“As stewards of the land, we have a sacred duty to ensure that all who use the natural bounty of our forests and waters do so in a responsible, sustainable and respectful manner,” said Larry Nooski, Chief of Nadleh Whut’en.
