PRINCE GEORGE–The Lheidli T’enneh First Nation and City of Prince George were two of eight recipients of government grants to help with wildfire reduction projects.

The BC Government gave $574,840 to eight local governments and First Nations Communities to help with wildfire initiatives.

The Lheidli T’enneh First Nation was granted $18,000 to assist with education, emergency planning, cross-training, and FireSmart activities for private land. The City of Prince George was granted $229,160 to assist with education, emergency planning, cross-training, fuel and vegetation management and FireSmart activities for private land.

The money is the second round of grants from the Community Resiliency Investment program. There are 44 grants that have been distributed province-wide from the program’s first application intake.

The grants are in addition to the more than $6 million in funding provided to 85 municipalities, regional districts and First Nations across BC. “The last two summers have shown the need for better preparation in advance of wildfire seasons,” said Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development. “To help keep people and communities as safe as possible, it’s more important than ever that we invest in programs that reduce the risk.”

The application deadline for the next intake for grants is Oct.18, 2019.
