Chamber wants a voice on caribou issue

PRINCE GEORGE – The CEO for the local Chamber of Commerce joined like-minded Chamber representatives this week to meet with Forests Minister Doug Donaldson about the Caribou recovery plans.

The Province has inked two agreements with two separate First Nations in the Peace Country and placed a large portion of the province along the Rockies from Prince George to the Kootenays under what’s called a Section 11 order. But details around the restrictions under that order are still unknown. Local Chamber CEO Todd Corrigall says they wanted to send a message that they want to be included in the discussions around the fate of communities under that Section 11.

“That, ensuring through these processes, the members that we all represent, the communities that we all work alongside, are properly consulted through that process.”

However, knowing this government, MLA Mike Morris feels they may not get the response they’re looking for.

“Was it money spent? I don’t know. I don’t think they learned anything more han they knew before they went down there. So, where the value-added was, I don’t know.”

Negotiators have inked a pair of agreements around Mountain Caribou protections with the West Moberly and the Saulteau First Nations, but northing has been determined for the rest of the province under Section 11. Morris has deep concerns the two agreements, which have yet to be accepted by the Province, will serve as a template for the rest of Section 11.

He believes the two agreements were done in secret and government needs “to go back to square one” and negotiate the whole thing again.
