PRINCE GEORGE – Fundraising efforts continue for new equipment and research at the BC Cancer Agency’s Centre for the North. Dr. Robert Olson is conducting clinical trials with what is called precision radiation therapy which applies radiation directly at a tumor without impacting the surrounding areas.

But, while the equipment at the Centre is only seven years old, it does not adequately meet the needs of precision radiation therapy. Currently, only one patient can receive the therapy every two weeks.

That’s where fundraising comes in.

The BC Cancer Foundation hopes to raise $1.75 million dollars, $500,000 would be required for a robotic patient positioning system. This system will upgrade one of two accelerator couches.

Another $300,000 would be used for a next-generation treatment planning suite, which would help implement the latest advances in radiation therapy. Another $100,000 would establish rapid-set up systems. The remainder of the required funds would help pay for the research and clinical trials.

This is the BC Cancer Foundation’s largest fundraising effort for the Centre for the North.

To date, just over 10% has been raised.
