ICBC road safety this long weekend

VANCOUVER–ICBC is reminding drivers to be smart behind the wheel this long weekend.

According to a media release by ICBC every Labour Day long weekend around five people die and 610 people are injured in 2,200 crashes across the province. On highways drivers can expect to see many RV’s, motorcyclists and trucks, and if you’re not heading out of town, beware of an influx of pedestrians and cyclists on the roads in the city.

ICBC has some tips for the road this long weekend:

  • Make a game of spotting motorcycles since they only really are visible if you look for them. Leave plenty of space when passing a motorcycle and allow at least three seconds of following distance.
  • Crashes with RV’s and trucks are usually much more serious, remember to keep clear of their blind spots. You should be able to see both mirrors when following a truck or RV
  • Most crashes with cyclists and pedestrians happen at intersections, make sure you’re making eye contact with them
  • Know your road conditions before leaving. Be realistic about travel times and accept delays that may arise.
