Canadian show jumpers turn attention to Tokyo and tough new rules
CALGARY — Canada is the only country to finish in the top five in team show jumping at the last three Summer Olympics, a run that includes a silver medal in 2008 and a narrow loss in a jump-off for bronze in 2016.
Canadian riders and horses can vie for the podium again at the 2020 Tokyo Games after qualifying a team at this summer’s Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
The Masters tournament opening Wednesday at Calgary’s Spruce Meadows will help Canadian team chef d’equipe Mark Laskin identify who can perform on demand as the athletes turn their attention to earning a spot on the Olympic team.
“Our riders are scattered all over the world in their various bases and generally they all try to compete here at Spruce Meadows,” Laskin told The Canadian Press. “It’s a great chance for us to compare apples to apples and see everyone jumping in the same conditions, the same course specs and against each other.
