Sex Scandals are to the US and the UK what misspent money scandals are to Canada
VICTORIA–A Historian at the University of Victoria says she knows what riles up Canadian voters.
Penny Bryden says that our neigbours down south, the US, and even some of those on the other side of the world, the UK, thrive off of sex scandals. While in Canada the greatest scandals seem to revolve around misspent money. Bryden is in the middle of conducting a five-year-long research project focusing on many scandals in Canada, including those surrounding financial, loyalty, sex, security and entitlement.
Bryden has gone through 1,200 to 1,400 scandals over Canada’s history, and says it’s a “running list,” she is constantly uncovering new scandals, from recent, to historical ones that may have only left a small trace of their existence.
According to her, the first political scandal happened after Confederation and involved the Canadian Pacific Railway and prime-minister Sir John A. Macdonald; when the PM was accused of receiving financial support from a shipping magnate in exchange for the contract to build the transcontinental railway.
