PRINCE GEORGE–Vegan donuts. While some of you may have cringed reading over those two words, or even possibly stuck your fingers down your throat— an entrepreneurial duo believes there is a market for them in Prince George.

Erin Forsberg and her mother Linda had been tossing around the idea of starting a vegan donut business for several years. “I have a brother, a sister and a few other family and friends that are vegan, or on a plant-based diet…they always struggled to find things that they enjoy,” said Forsberg to CKPG News. She says her family would go on “food vacations”–to larger cities, to indulge in the vegan goods that are not available in Prince George.

“I always thought that was kind of odd, like why can’t you get the best of both worlds? Why can’t we find anything like that locally?” said Forsberg. Vegan Fest which took place alongside Fall Fest earlier in September was when they decided to take a leap and showcase their vegan donuts to the community–creating Doug’s Donuts.

500 donuts sold out in 2.5 hours, and the feedback they got from plant-based and the omnivores, was positive. Erin doesn’t follow a plant-based diet herself but says she supports the lifestyle and believes there is a market for it in Prince George. “We kind of wanted to break the stigma around the plant-based diet, and that something that is vegan can be delicious and taste exactly the same,” said Forsberg.

When asked if making the donuts utterly plant-based was more difficult, Erin told us that in fact, it wasn’t, “it’s more the creative side of things–the donut itself is identical to making a regular donut.”

Currently, they offer double chocolate raspberry, chocolate chip cookie dough, oreo cookie, peach sugar, vanilla dip and a maple coconut flavours but Forsberg says they are constantly trying to dream up a larger variety. Erin is currently taking orders through Instagram direct messages, as well as Facebook.

Erin and her mom plan to continue making the donuts, hoping that in the future this could turn into a long-term and profitable business.
