Northern FanCon organizers hoping late surge of pledges keeps 2020 event alive

Northern FanCon has been a staple in Prince George for the past 5 years, but the 2020 edition of the event is in limbo.

At the beginning of September, organizers of the event announced a Kickstarter fundraiser to raise $100,000 by the end of the month to secure the event for 2020 and make sure it is viable.

Fast forward to today (Thursday, Sept 26), and the fundraiser has just passed the halfway point of reaching its goal.

“For me, this event is really grounded in film, television, and story,” shared organizer Norm Coyne.

“That is how a story goes. You get to that point where it looks like you are not going to make it, but I have absolute faith in our community and in our supporters that we will actually hit that target on the weekend, but it will take some work.”

The Kickstarter allows people to pledge money for both tickets or for booths at the 2020 edition of the event.

Despite the uncertainty, Coyne and the rest of the organizers have already been planning for the 6th edition of FanCon in Prince George.

“We have some guests who are tentatively booked. They only come if we hit our goal. The event only happens if we hit our goal,” stated Coyne.

For local Cosplayer Karen Flores, she has attended Northern FanCon since its inception back in 2015 and loves being able to share her passion with her friends and family in her own backyard.

“Having something close to home to make sure you can travel to that you can have all of your kit with you. Sometimes we build costumes that are really heavy and expensive and sometimes it is a hassle to travel, but something local changes a lot of what we can bring forward and share with other people.”

The deadline to donate to the Kickstarter is Sunday at 1:23 p.m.
