Winter tire legislation set to come into effect

Despite the season officially changing to Fall last week, winter conditions are coming sooner rather than later.

This is why experts are advising residents to get their winter tires on so they are prepared for the first snowfall of the year.

“The trend seems to be more and more over the last couple of years of people being ready for the first snowfall whereas 10 years ago people would wait until the first snowfall,” shared Chris Milum, Manager of Kal Tire on Central in Prince George.

Milum shared that once the temperature starts to consistently get to 7 degrees or lower that is the time to start thinking about getting your winter tires on.

There continues to be a misconception about needing or not needing winter tires as a lot people think all-season tires are fine during the winter. However, there is one major difference between the two.

“It’s the safety part of it. Winter tires are designed to handle the extreme cold and conditions. The starting and stopping and the turning. They have to go through rigorous testing in order to pass and meet those minimum requirements so it’s just safer all around,” explained Milum.

Stopping alone, winter tires can make the difference between stopping or ending up in a fender bender.

For residents who are looking to hit the highway anytime soon, it will be even more important to get your tires changed over as the winter tire legislation on B.C highways comes into place October 1st.
