'Peace of mind' for those battling cancer

New campaign launched by the Canadian Cancer Society

PRINCE GEORGE– The Canadian Cancer Society launched a new campaign this morning (Oct.1st) one aimed at helping give peace of mind to those battling cancer in the north.

The Peace of Mind Campaign aims at easing the financial burden of cancer patients visiting the Kordyban Lodge, affordable accommodation for those battling cancer. The campaign hopes to reduce the nightly cost of staying at the lodge from the current $54 per guest to $20.

Michael Downes was a resident at the lodge for seven weeks as he battled Stage 4 nasopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, a malignant tumor in his head.

He says he’s not sure he would still be here if it hadn’t been for the care he received at the lodge. Downes, like many others, was left juggling payments for medication and his daughters stay after his diagnosis, “financially I was getting pulled in a lot of different directions,” he told us.

The goal is $450,000 and already, more than $220,000 has been pledged to-date towards the campaign. Regional districts across the north are supporting the campaign, with the Peace River Regional pledging $50,000 per year for the next three years.
