3rd Parties

Smaller parties could play major role in Federal election

The Federal election is just around the corner and residents of Prince George and across the nation have more options this time around of who they can vote for.

With so many options for Canadians to vote for, smaller parties could play a big role in determining the outcome of who represents each region in Ottawa.

“Well depends on the riding of course,” explained UNBC Political Science Professor Gary Wilson.

“In situations where the vote can be very close some of these small parties can take votes away from the larger parties which would then influence the outcome.”

One of those parties is the PPC. The Maxime Bernier led party continues to generate buzz and the new party has high hopes going into the election.

“I’m very confident because I believe in people. The most important thing is that people in this party know that this election is different,” shared Cariboo-Prince George candidate Jing Lan Yang.

That confidence is echoed nationwide, but the question locally is whether or not these small parties could play a major role in the outcome here.

“The Cariboo-Prince George riding though the last election was pretty close. The 2nd and 3rd parties, the NDP and Liberals outpolled and got more votes than the Conservative who became MP. So you could easily see a party like the PPC, for example, could take votes away from the Conservatives might actually tip the balance if you get the same type of turnout for the NDP and the Liberals,” added Wilson.

The Federal election is set for October 21st.
