New rules coming for three local industries
PRINCE GEORGE – In a bid to not only meet national standards but spare wear and tear on civic infrastructure, the City is introducing new rules around what certain industries can put down the drain. The new bylaw specifically targets vehicle wash operators, mechanical repair businesses and food services businesses. It’s designed to reduce the amount of grease and oils that wind up in the system.
“We haven’t actually gotten to the point where we get fatbergs, but we do have situations where we do have clogging of our lines that are caused by oil and grease and debris that is deposited into our system,” explains Wil Wedel, Manager, Utilities Division. “So when that happens, we have to use large pieces of equipment, like our vac machines that go in and flush the lines and then they also vacuum that materials up to it don’t continue to go down the line.”
The 800+ businesses that will be impacted by this new bylaw will have three years to comply.
