PRINCE GEORGE — If advance polls are any indication, voter turnout should be fairly high locally on General Voting Day Monday.

According to Elections Canada, 12,380 eligible voters in Cariboo-Prince George cast a ballot during advance polls last weekend – up 25 per cent from advance polls in 2015.

The advance numbers were even more impressive in Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies where 15,341 people voted.

That’s a 40 per cent bump from 2015. Elections Canada says it’s a trend they’ve seen across the country.

“Yes it is. I think it’s pretty clear that Canadians like the option of voting at advance polls and I think the increase to 12 hours to eight hours in 2015 has also played into this increase in participation,” says Andrea Marantz, spokesperson with Elections Canada.

Nationally, 68.5 per cent of Canadians cast a ballot in the 2015 election.

That was the highest turnout since the 1993 federal election when 69.6 per cent of Canadians hit the polls.
