“BC Brand” pursued
PRINCE GEORGE – While it was vetted two and a half years ago, the idea of a beef processing plant in the North is still be looked at. But the BC Cattlemen’s Association believes something else has to happen first. A Buy BC brand has to established.
“Right now, our concentration is going to be on building that brand and getting our volumes up and establishing that this is viable,” explains Kevin Boon, the General Manager for the BC Cattlemen’s Association.
And, until the demand is built up, the federally-inspected plant in Kamloops will meet the demand. However, Boon says Prince George has all the requirements for such a facility in terms of infrastructure.
“So we need a supply of cattle. We need a supply of grain to finish them out and we need a good transportation corridor. Prince George has the highway, the railway, the airport, close access to a port if we want to export. All the things line up. We have good grain support, we have good cattle supply. So it has hit all the checkmarks.”
