TYH: What to expect when you’re expecting

Pregnancy is something that is not yet in my cards but I thought it would be interesting to learn a bit about it this week.

We spoke with Kira Lewis, a Naturopathic Physician, once again and chatted about what to expect when you’re expecting.

But before I did that, I did some research and the first thing I learned was that kids aren’t cheap! According to several online resources bringing a child into the world can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $15,000 a year.

I am a vegan, and I’ve always been cautious to ensure I am eating appropriately to ensure that I am not deficient in any nutrients, and can only imagine that growing a baby would suck you dry of some nutrients.

“Iron is a big one because you have to account for increased blood cells. You grow and develop a placenta, which is blood cells again and then you want to be oxygenating your baby adequately,” said Lewis, “so you want to make sure you are heading into that pregnancy with more than enough iron.”

According to a study published in the Saudi Medical Journal, 52% of women globally can suffer from anemia during pregnancy. Other deficiencies include Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D.

Lewis also broke down typical pregnancy symptoms (may differ from person to person):

First-trimester: fatigue and morning sickness

Second-trimester: “golden trimester,” energy comes back, morning sickness typically goes away

Third-trimester: energy decreases

Lewis mentions that partners should check in with the female baring the baby, keeping in mind that mental health and anxiety can spike during pregnancy.

As well as realizing that normal activities will be disturbed and that an extra hand doesn’t hurt.
