SD57 to hold public engagement on KRSS name change
PRINCE GEORGE — The School District 57 board approved a motion this week to start the renaming process of Kelly Road Secondary School to Shas Ti Secondary School. Now, it appears the public will be able to formally voice their opinions and concerns on the matter.
The community engagement plan is still in the works and will likely be announced within a week. It has been decided, however, the consultation will end prior to the new building opening in September.
Name changes to schools in the past have not garnered this much attention. Schools like Polaris Montessori, Lac des Bois, and Nusdeh Yoh having new names in recent memory. School District 57 Board Chair, Tim Bennett, attributes this to the passion of the Kelly Road community and the current political climate.
Meanwhile, support has also been shown since the name change announcement. A new petition rivaling the old. Reconciliation the focus of many comments. Students have also raised their voices to SD 57 on potential ways to get the best of both worlds. Those comments are the ones resonating with the board, according to Bennett.
