New domestic, sexual violence leave bill welcomed but long overdue
PRINCE GEORGE — New provincial legislation passed earlier this week that will help support those facing domestic or sexual violence. The Province has passed new legislation to give workers facing domestic or sexual violence five days of paid time off. This will allow those who are facing such times to find things like a safe place to stay or medical attention, providing a little bit of stress relief.
This builds on the unpaid, job-protected leave introduced in spring 2019. It is a welcomed sign for an organization like Elizabeth Fry, whose Bally Bassi believes it is long overdue.
There is, however, slight concern some may abuse the legislation and take time off when not needed, or on the flip side, cases will still not be brought up. The new bill also covers parents of a child or dependent impacted by domestic or sexual violence.
