SMITHERS–A Prince George man has been arrested after a spree of vehicle thefts that took him across northern BC.

On Monday, March 9th at around 5:05 PM, Smithers RCMP received a report of a man on a bicycle who had stolen a black Ford F350 after leaving behind another Ford F250 that had been reported stolen from Terrace.

Later that same day, the suspect made a pit stop in the Hungry Hill area where he left behind the F250 and allegedly stole a Ford F150, which was reported to possibly have contained firearms and other weapons.

Into the evening hours of the same day, the suspect made another stop at a home in the 5200 Block of Highway 16, before being chased away by the property owner for allegedly attempting to steal items off the property. Once again the suspect left his allegedly stolen vehicle behind and took a Chevy 3500, which was later involved in a crash in Houston, BC.

Less than an hour after that police received a report of another vehicle theft, a GMC 2500 had been taken from the 4800 Block of Summit Lake Road. At which point Burns Lake RCMP and Fraser Lake RCMP were called to assist the already involved RCMP Detachments.

Nearing midnight of the same day Burns Lake RCMP members spotted the reported stolen vehicle in the parking lot of the local hospital. Police attempted to stop the suspect but the suspect failed to stop and fled the area.

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 10th police once again located the stolen vehicle which had crashed on Hwy.16 west of Hawse Loop Rd. Following that, RCMP received a call at a residence where it was believed a snowmobile had been stolen off the property.

As police made their way to the home, the stolen snowmobile drove at a high rate directly at the police cruisers, narrowly missing two police vehicles and fleeing down trails where police were unable to follow with their cruisers.

And finally, just ten minutes after that encounter police received another report that someone had stolen a Dodge plow truck from Bartlett Road, leaving behind a snowmobile. Police managed to locate the vehicle on Hwy. 16 near Cougar Rd. where police managed to assemble their vehicles in a manner to prevent the suspect from fleeing.

The suspect then rammed one police vehicle and then reversed and rammed the second police vehicle. The 38-year-old man from Prince George was arrested at gunpoint due to the possibility of their being firearms in one of the stolen vehicles. During the arrest, police seized drugs, suspected to be methamphetamine.

The suspect was taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the crash with non-life threatening injuries and was later released to police custody. One police officer was also treated for non-life threatening injuries.
