PRINCE GEORGE – Mayor and Council exercised their own social distancing exercise during last night’s regular meeting and the City’s response to the COVID-19 was a dominant theme during the meeting.

Mayor Lyn Hall commenced the presentation with a rundown of events that have transpired since the Province declared a state of emergency on March 11th. Between 15 and 20 events, like the World Women’s Curling Championships, have been cancelled since then.

He noted that City Hall remains open and, so far, Council meetings will continue. However, staff will be looking at its options to conduct meetings “virtually,” should things begin to heat up.

Council heard that some municipalities have opted to introduce states of local emergency, such as Vancouver, but Administration is recommending at this time not to follow suit in order to “avoid a patchwork” of orders, adding the City’s needs are being met with the provincial order.

Administration noted the staff from the different facilities that has been shut down have been moved into custodial duties. Overtime by senior staff will be addressed with vacation time in lieu of overtime pay.

Councillor Brian Skakun asked the head of the Finance and Audit Committee about any possibilities for financial relief for things like municipal taxes or utilities.

However, Garth Frizzell noted the City has “no power to change the dates” as they are set out in the Community Charter. But many on Council noted “ we have to find some relief for our residents.”
