Ochitwa excited to join Centennials next year

Despite missing a quarter of the season with an injury, the 2019-2020 season was an incredible campaign for Cariboo Cougars forward Alex Ochitwa.

In 30 games, the graduating Cougars forward put up 23 goals and 31 assists, which was good for 2nd in league scoring.

For the team, they got out to a slow start. However, Ochitwa and the rest of his teammates felt it was their performance at the annual Macs Midget Tournament in Calgary which built plenty of momentum for the squad going into the 2nd half of the season.

“That was huge for us,” stated Ochitwa.

“We had a couple of really big wins. We had the comeback one against the Raiders (St.Albert). We had a couple of tight games. A close one with the Buffalos. We beat OKR (Okanagan Rockets) in the quarterfinals and that was big for us too. Beating a team in our league and knowing we can compete and be there with the top team both in our league and in Western Canada.”

Ochitwa felt the 2nd half of the season was very strong for Cariboo and they were playing the right way going into the post-season. However, then the year came to an end due to Covid-19. Now the Cariboo Cougars leading scorer is set to make the jump to Junior A as he joins the Merritt Centennials of the BCHL.

“Towards the end of the season, I started talking to them a bit more. I know Brophy Dunne, he played on our team last year, and they asked him a bit about me and he said good things. They liked the conversations we had and it all worked out,” shared Ochitwa.

Even though he is moving away from home, Ochitwa is excited for the chance to come back to Prince George as a visitor with the Cents as Merritt moves into the same division as the Spruce Kings.

Now with the long off-season, the Major Midget Cats leading scorer from last year knows there is plenty of work to do ahead of next season.

“Of course I want to get stronger and faster. You always need to do that. I think the way I think the game is good that is something I will have for next year, but getting stronger and faster and being more explosive in my skating is something I want to improve on,” explained Ochitwa.

The graduating Cariboo Cougar joins a Centennials squad who missed the BCHL playoffs last season with a 14-40-1-3 record.
