TERRACE–Police are asking the public to take steps to protect their property after after receiving two bike theft reports in one day.

On May 1st, Terrace RCMP were notified that a GT BMX had been stolen from an address on the 2500 block of Pear Street sometime between 9 p.m. on April 30th and 8 a.m. on May 1st.

The bike had been locked to a set of stairs by its handlebars, which were removed, and the rest of the bike had been stolen. The BMX has stickers on its frame and is registered with 529 Garage.

Later that day, a bike was stolen from the Terrace Mountain trail head around 3:45 p.m.,while a youth walked away briefly to check the condition of the trail. The ‘Intense’ brand bike, is red with dual ‘rockshox’ suspension, disc brakes, and red grips.

“Along with making it harder for criminals to steal bikes, it’s just as important for the community to make it harder for thieves to sell them.”– Crystal Evelyn, Terrace RCMP’s Community Policing Constable

“When you’re purchasing a second-hand bike, take the time to ask questions about where it came from and why the person is selling it,” added Evelyn.

Terrace RCMP encourage people to register their bikes with 529 Garage and are providing Shield ID’s for free for those who do register.

Bike theft prevention tips:

  • Record serial numbers (regardless of the value of the bike) so that they can be added to police computer records, helping bikes be identified if located
  • Most bike stores keep serial numbers and information of your purchased bike. Check with your local bike shop to obtain that information if your bike does get stolen
  • Photograph your bike, as a reference, to assist police in identification
  • Never leave your bike unlocked in public
  • Never lock your bike by the front wheel only
  • If storing your bike at home, store it in a safe place using a lock or on your property inside a locked area
  • If you are leaving your bikes unattended in the back of a vehicle, lock the bikes to your vehicle. Choose appropriate places to park
