QUESNEL – Recently, the City of Quesnel passed a bylaw that only a small number of other communities across the province have been able to achieve.

In a move to minimize wildlife attractants, Council approved a new residential garbage fine with a hope to correct the behaviour of those repeat offenders.

Every year, bears and other wildlife are killed because of the decisions people make when taking out the garbage.

Council approved a bylaw banning residents leaving garbage containers out overnight during.

According to Mayor Bob Simpson, the old policy was not influencing those who refused to change their behaviour. Watch Clip:

Residents could now be fined $50 for putting their garbage out the night before the scheduled pick up.

Residents must now only put their garbage containers out between 4 and 8 am on collection day.

Councillor Martin Runge says he is concerned wildlife will still be attracted to residential garbage whether it’s at the curb or not.

Mayor Simpson says the intent of the bylaw is for those individuals where education does not work to correct their behaviour.

The city of Quesnel joins the hand full of other communities around the province that now have the option to fine residents who continue to make neighbourhoods unsafe by attracting wildlife. Watch the full video story:
