Old Fort Rd. re-opens after landslide took out 100 metres of road

FORT ST. JOHN– Some exciting news for drivers in and around Fort St.John, the newly built Old Fort Road will open to two-way traffic later this evening (July 17).

The Ministry of Transportation has been working on restoring road access to the community since June 19, 2020, after a landslide destroyed a 100-metre section of Old Fort Rd. more than 300 metres down the slope. The road is the only road leading to a small community southwest of Fort St. John.

The ministry was first able to provide road access–under specific conditions and timing–to residents on July 9.

“The ministry thanks all residents and travellers for their ongoing patience while repairs continue, and also extends its gratitude to the Peace River Regional District and its other partners – and especially to the crews who have been out around the clock – for their efforts to ensure residents had safe access to Old Fort Road as quickly as possible.”–Release from the Ministry of Transportation

Finishing touches on the road will continue over the next week. Drivers can expect minor delays of up to 20 minutes and, at times, single-lane, alternating traffic. Geotechnical assessments in the area will continue.
