VICTORIA—”Today we are reporting the third-highest number of new cases we have seen in a day since the pandemic began,” read the joint statement by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, and Health Minister Adrian Dix.

85 new cases of COVID-19 were reported today (Aug.12), this is the third-highest number of cases reported over a 24 hour period, since the start of the pandemic. Of those four are in the Northern Health Authority. The north’s total of test-positive cases is now at 104.

Cases by Health region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 1,273
  • Fraser Health: 2,203
  • Vancouver Island Health: 150
  • Interior Health: 394
  • Northern Health: 104
  • People who reside outside of Canada: 72

There has been one new death, bringing B.C.’s death toll to 196. 531 cases are considered active in the province. Eight people are in hospital and five of those are in ICU.

There are no new outbreaks in health-care or in any communities.

“The majority of these cases are young people in the Lower Mainland and their exposures have been at events in the community. The cases we are seeing today reflect exposures from a week to 10 days ago. A significant number of cases are also linked to travel from out of province.”–Joint statement by Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister, Adrian Dix

The duo is once again asking British Columbians to “refocus” their attention to flattening the curve of infection.

“One of the most effective ways to keep people safe is through contact tracing, which starts with each person who has tested positive for COVID-19 understanding who their contacts may be to provide appropriate follow-up and stop further transmission,” reads the statement.

The Province announced earlier today their plans to hire 500 new health professionals to aid in contact tracing across B.C.

“We are watching the cases climb, which is concerning. We need everyone to recommit to using the skills we’ve learned. Keep gatherings small, have a designated ‘contact keeper,’ limit time with others, maintain physical distance and always stay home if you’re feeling unwell.”–Joint statement by Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister, Adrian Dix

3,496 people have recovered from COVID-19 in B.C.
