ckpgckpVANCOUVER—Three new cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the Northern Health region today (Sept.3).

Provincially there are 89 new cases, including one epi-linked case. There are now a total of 6,041 test positive cases in B.C., with 167 of those being in the north.

Cases by Health Region:

  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 2,012
  • Fraser Health: 3,155
  • Island Health: 178
  • Interior Health: 450
  • Northern Health: 167
  • People who reside outside of Canada: 79

Currently 1,175 cases are active and there is one new death to COVID-19 for a total of 210 provincially.

Modelling information presented by B.C.’s provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, shows that B.C. continues to see cases in younger people. Dr. Henry says that the median age of the virus has gone from 50 down to 41. Recently, hospitalizations have seen an uptick.

“We know, from the very beginning, one of the important considerations of this pandemic is to make sure that we protect our health care system so that it’s there to provide needed health services to everybody.” —Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C. provincial health officer

While there has been an increase in hospitalizations, Henry says that they are still manageable, but that “we don’t want these numbers to increase any further.”

The re-opening of the economy has resulted in increased transmission at restaurants and bars, workplaces and private parties and events, over the past several weeks.

“For the most part in recent weeks, we have been able to find that balance keeping essential services open, businesses going, protecting our most vulnerable. It also tells us that as we prepare for the respiratory season ahead, we need to continue to break those chains of transmission as efficiently and effectively as possible.”—Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C. provincial health officer

She adds that British Columbians focus needs to be on keeping cases low, as we continue to move forward, and not participate in situations that could lead to a spike in cases.

There are 34 people in hospital, 11 of whom are in ICU. 4,644 people have recovered from COVID-19 in B.C.
