Full driver doors coming to BC Transit in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE—BC Transit is taking another step to protecting it’s transit operators.

Full driver doors are coming to buses in Prince George, and across BC Transit systems in the province, in an attempt to keep operators safe amidst the pandemic. Retrofits on buses in the City will get underway in the coming days.

“The full driver door is a moveable barrier situated to the right of the driver’s seat near the fare box designed to increase protection for our driver’s.”—Release from BC Transit

The new doors include a transparent piece of laminated tempered glass with an anti-glare coating and metal base. The driver door windows can be adjusted by drivers to account for sightlines associated with different seat positions.

Installations will be carried out over a three day period. The new doors will replace the current vinyl panels installed as protective barriers earlier this year in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. BC Transit says that community and handyDART buses will continue to be equipped with vinyl panels. 633 buses will be retrofitted with full driver doors across 34 BC Transit systems in B.C. BC Transit adds that installations of the doors will not impact service.
