RCMP seek help finding missing 79-year-old last seen mushroom picking

NEW HAZELTON—UPDATE (Sept.23): New Hazelton RCMP are once again reaching out the public in hopes of speaking to anyone who may have seen Thomas Dominic Dennis.

Police say that it has come to their attention that there are people who reported seeing Dennis on the day he was reported missing, however have not been able to speak with them directly.

Police say they do not know the names of the individuals who reportedly saw Dennis on September 16, and are asking them to reach out to them.

If you did see Dennis and have not spoken to RCMP, you are asked to contact New Hazelton RCMP at 250 842-5244.

EARLIER (Sept.18): RCMP are seeking public assistance in locating a 79-year-old man who went missing on September 16.

New Hazelton RCMP say that Thomas Dominic Dennis was reported missing on the evening of September 16 after going mushroom picking near Price Creek Forest Service Road and not returning home.

Thomas Dominic Dennis is described as:

  • Indigenous male
  • 79 years-of-age
  • Last seen wearing blue jeans, black cap, black rubber boots and a grey checked sweater

Police say he was last seen at 12:30 p.m. by another mushroom picker. Dennis was not prepared to be out overnight.

Community members initiated a search before contacting RCMP and since, local search and rescue were deployed to assist in the search, along with the Police Dog Service and RCMP Air Service on the morning of September 17. Search efforts are also being supported by the community of Gitwangak.
