PRINCE GEORGE – A little over 20 people showed up for a rally in support of old-growth forests at the junction of Highway 97 and 16 around noon Friday.

Conservation North says after 50 years of unrestrained logging, the biodiversity has been nearly eliminated and has led to many degraded landscapes.

“This model of forestry must be turned upside down,” said Peter Ewert a speaker on Friday.

“We’re rallying because this is an issue that matters to many Northern BC’ers,” said rally organizer Michelle Connolly.

The rally held Friday is calling on the BC Government to act, recently an independent report was done concerning the state of old-growth forests.

The report outlined recommendations for what should be done to protect old-growth and led to the protection of nine areas in BC, none of which fell around Prince George.

Connolly said more needs to be done.

“They produce beautiful products, and here in Northern BC we tend to get into the habit of using old-growth forests to make products,” said Connolly. “But at this point, we’re losing the services they provide for wildlife habitat, climate change management, clean water, clean air, and all those other values.”

The group is asking the provincial government to transition towards community-based forestry in second-growth forests.
