Sep 22, 2020 | 6:00 AM

PRINCE GEORGE—If you drive by Mr.PG tonight, don’t be alarmed if you see Prince George’s mascot illuminated in red.

Today (Sept.22) landmarks across the nation will be illuminated in red for Red Alert, a day in which landmarks across the nation are lighting up in red as a sign of solidarity with event makers for “Day of Visibility for the Entertainment and Events Industry,”— an industry that is continuing to face challenges amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In March of 2020 the world was flipped upside down due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Live event workers across Canada and around the globe were among the first to lose jobs, and all current direction is pointing towards event workers being among the last to return to work.”—Release by Red Alert PG

Events such as this one have taken place around the globe. Canadians across the country are able to participate in the event by helping light the night red after sun down to raise awareness for the industry.

A press release by local event organizer, Kyle Sampson, highlights that the event is in no way a protest, and is meant to raise awareness.

“These impacts cause significant blows to our local economy as these businesses employ local people who spend money locally.”—Release by Red Alert PG

The release goes on to add that not only has the pandemic had impacts on those in the industry, but also patrons who may be struggling to find coping mechanisms during this time.
