Five new cases of COVID-19 in Northern Health, 499 in B.C.

VICTORIA–There are five new cases of COVID-19 in Northern Health since Friday’s last update.

The five new cases reported this afternoon (Oct.19) bring the north’s total to 355. Provincially, 499 cases were reported, including seven epi-linked cases, since last Friday.

Cases by Health Region:

• Vancouver Coastal Health: 4,146
• Fraser Health: 6,244
• Vancouver Island Health: 243
• Interior Health: 611
• Northern Health: 355
• People who reside outside of Canada: 88 *this number was corrected by the provincial health officer this afternoon from the previously reported number of 89

There are two new deaths for a total of 253 in B.C. since the start of the pandemic; one of those deaths was in the Fraser Health region while the other was in Vancouver Coastal Health. 1,639 cases are active and of those are 67 are in hospital. Of the 67 in hospital, 19 are in ICU.

4,028 people are currently being monitored for the virus after being exposed to a confirmed case.

“There has been some questions that have arisen…about a second wave…and one can say that we are in our second wave… of our COVID-19 storm in B.C.”–Dr. Bonnie Henry, Provincial Health Officer

“But we have control over what that wave looks like, and we have shown that we can do that,” said Dr. Henry in today’s (Oct. 19) COVID-19 update, in regards to British Columbians being able to control the number of case numbers we see reported daily.

There are now 11,687 test-positive cases since the start of the pandemic in B.C. 9,753 people have recovered since March.
