VICTORIA — A rare Saturday update from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix provided a stern Dr. Henry issuing new orders in an effort to curb the steadily increasing number of COVID-19 cases in BC.

Communities within the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health Regions, with the exception of Bella Coola Valley and the central coast, are affected by the order which focuses on social gatherings, travel, indoor group physical activities, and workplace safety. The orders are effective until Monday, November 23, at 12pm.

“This will give us a chance to stop the transmission, to have a break in that rising transmission rate that we are seeing. We need to focus our attention on that now,” explained Dr. Henry.

Dr. Henry went into further detail for the orders. There will be no social gatherings of any size with anyone other than your immediate household. This supersedes the prior mass gathering order. Weddings and funerals may continue with immediate household, however, no associated receptions.

For travel, essential travel only is recommended when going in or out of Fraser Health and Vancouver Coastal Health. Travel for sports is also prohibited. “Those who live outside these areas should not visit unless it is urgently required or essential,” Dr. Henry continued.

Group physical activities must be approved by local health officers. Indoor sports where physical distancing cannot be maintained will be suspended for the duration of this order.

Active inspections will be increased with public health, WorkSafeBC, and bylaw officers within the affected regions. In a message to businesses, Dr. Henry pleaded, “Now is the time for you to relook at your COVID safety plans, go to the WorkSafeBC website, to update the plans, and to reinforce them. And if you’re a worker, you need to look at those plans and make sure you are adhering as well.”

Party buses, group limousines, and other perimeter seating vehicles are ordered to stop operating until further notice effective immediately.

“Public Health Orders are always a last resort. But right now, these additional measures are needed,” relayed Dr. Henry.

Saturday’s update saw 567 new cases of COVID-19 in BC for a total of 17,716. Nine of those cases are in Northern Health. The largest jump was in Fraser Health, an increase of 411.
