Five ice rinks are currently open in the City of Prince George as of last month, but soon the City will be home to a different type of hockey rink. One which will help young players develop, older players enjoy a different style of the game, and one which will hopefully be open year-round.

Mike Peterson and Chris Hunter are the co-founders of Northern Ice sports Ltd and are currently in the process of building an ice rink inside of the Prince George Curling Club.

“It’s a dream in the works,” stated Peterson to CKPG.

“There have been a couple of us talking about having a private ice facility in town for years. We have young kids who play hockey. Have seen them on the small ice and it was amazing.”

Construction of the 3 on 3 style rink which is 125 ft x 55 ft began in mid-October and ice is almost complete and once the facility is all ready, they hope to off a number of different activities to the public.

This includes plenty of youth development on-ice training along with 3 on 3 hockey leagues. However, the two hope to grow the rink as time carries on.

“We want to do a soft opening because we want to make sure our product is really what the community needs and wants,” shared Chris Hunter.

“Long term we see tremendous opportunity. We are hoping to have ice in the summer. We are going to be wide open to the community needs and wants to support.”

Information for both youth hockey opportunities at the facility along with adult and rec 3 on 3 leagues will be released in the near future.

They hope to have some league play begin in January of 2021.
