PRINCE GEORGE – In the summer months, the fairways and greens were thriving as COVID-19 laid an impact on just about every other sport.

Now in the winter months, early indication would show that cross country skiing might just be that outdoor activity that’s booming as a result of so many other sports currently being on hiatus.

“The nordic ski season, as well as scene, for all of BC has been blowing up membership levels across clubs everywhere across BC,” said Angela LaFebvre, General Manager of the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club. “At the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club, we’re not seeing anything different. We’re actually enjoying record-breaking membership levels.”

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club has always prided itself in being able to provide a spacious and safe environment for locals to enjoy the outdoors during the winter months, and that’s even more so now as restrictions prevent the participation for many other sports and activities.

“The last couple of years, we have been increasing our membership levels,” says LaFebvre. “However, this year we have exceeded it greatly. Last year, we saw 1,750. This year, we’re at 2,450.”

And for those who have been regular visitors to the club in years past, LaFebvre says there are some changes as a result of the pandemic.

“There is a few changes. Inside the lodge, inside the rental shop, we do ask for you to dawn a mask when you come in,” explained LaFebvre. “Out on the trail, it’s not required to wear the masks, but if you are going to come within two metres, depending on what you’re involved in, you are going to be asked to dawn a mask just to ensure public safety.”

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club offers up over 50 kilometres of trail, with the latest trail, the ridge runner, opening up new this year. The club is also working to create ‘experiences’ rather than events this year as they try to freshen each visit to the club for those visiting.
