COVID-19 claims 8 more lives

VICTORIA — The provincial government is reporting 428 new cases of COVID-19 in British Columbia, 45 in Northern Health.

That brings the total number of cases in B.C. since the pandemic began to 54,629. Of those, 45,999 have recovered.

Sadly eight more people have died bringing the provincial death toll to 954. One of those deaths was in Northern Health. The number of people who have died due to COVID-19 in northern B.C. now sits at 31.

The province says 367 people are currently in hospital province-wide – 77 of whom are in intensive care. In Northern Health, 27 people are in hospital – 17 of whom are in critical care.

The number of active cases in B.C. now stands at 6,472, down from 6,823 yesterday.

“To date, 28,209 people have received a COVID-19 vaccine in British Columbia. Our focus is to ensure we safely deliver the vaccines as quickly as possible to communities across the province, using all available supply,” reads a joint statement from B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix and Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry.

“While the focus is on first-priority populations in the next three months, as new vaccines are approved and additional supply becomes available, we will incorporate the additional doses into our distribution to enable as many people as possible to be immunized as soon as they can.”

In response to the pandemic, the provincial government has extended the provincial state of emergency, allowing health and emergency management officials to continue to use extraordinary powers under the Emergency Program Act (EPA) to support the Province’s COVID-19 pandemic response.

The state of emergency is extended through the end of the day on Jan. 19, 2021, to allow staff to take the necessary actions to keep British Columbians safe and manage immediate concerns and COVID-19 outbreaks.
