Winter finally here – Environment Canada

PRINCE GEORGE — Though it was an unusually slow start to winter in the Prince George area, the colder temperatures have finally arrived, and according to Environment Canada, they will likely be with us for a while.

This after the third warmest December on record in Prince George, and a warmer than normal January up until this week, with temperatures commonly above the freezing mark.

Environment Canada says we’re now near seasonal temperatures due to La Nina finally kicking in.

“The sub-seasonal model and even the seasonal model, going beyond the traditional week to two week forecast, are starting to show convergence on a colder trend into the spring,” says Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Armel Castellan.

“A late start to winter and also perhaps a late end to winter. And of course that has implications on the freshet come spring. If we delay the snow making and it continues to snow here and there into March and April, well, especially at higher elevations, then of course the eventual melt will come and if there’s a lot of snow to melt, that could cause some issues.”

As for the short term weather outlook, flurries are expected to continue to fall on Saturday, turning into snow overnight and into Sunday. Another two to four centimetres of snow is coming our way on Sunday.
