Social Work Week

PRINCE GEORGE – March 14th to 20th is Social Work Week in BC.

The week celebrates those who fight on behalf of those who can’t. There are many who associate social work with child protection.

“It is so much more than that,” says Dawn Hemingway, Executive Member for the BC Association of Social Workers, Northern Branch. “Social work has so many people involved in health care, different aspects of health care. Whether its mental health, whether its seniors, whether its in acute care, long term care. But also in a lot of other places”

But like so many professions, social workers are in short supply. And I think that’s one of the reasons why, initially, we had a social work program UNBC. Because people used to have to go far, down to Vancouver or Alberta, to get a degree. But we still have a shortage, in Northern British Columbia in particular.”

According to the proclamation, “the primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, especially the most vulnerable in society.”
