PRINCE GEORGE — The pandemic has caused a lot of uncertainty but healthcare workers have been helping citizens throughout it all.

Prince George residents are showing appreciation to their health care workers tonight with roughly 50 vehicles passing by the senior care centers, and to the hospital in a parade-like fashion.

The local First Nations will also be drumming at the hospital between 6-6:30 p.m., and Covid protocols are being followed.

“We are doing safety protocols, keeping our distance, wearing double masks. I want everybody to continue doing what they’re doing, keeping their bubbles small, and stick to the minimum gatherings,” says traditional drummer, Wesley Mitchell.

But this is not the first time this act is taking place, as Mitchell was the organizer of the first parade that was held by local First Nations, one year ago.

“When the pandemic first started, the town was almost like a ghost town, so when I heard about healthcare workers, working twelve hour days, overtime and being flooded with unknown circumstances, I just felt something I needed to do was to stand up.”

Wesley adds that drumming was his way of putting smiles on individuals’ faces.

“I started drumming at the UHNBC, the Prince George Hospital to help support the frontline health care workers, to bring spirit to the community, and to stand up against the virus, as it was a scary time for everybody.”

Mitchell says that he’s not alone in this act of kindness.

“The people came with me and started to drum with me, bring smudge, elders were there, and it was very vital”

Citizens in the city of Prince George are continuing to get vaccinated, but it’s still unclear when the end to the pandemic will be.
