KAMLOOPS, BC – The Vancouver Giants evened up the season series with the Prince George Cougars with a 2-1 win Monday night inside the Sandmen Centre in Kamloops.

With the loss, the Cougars drop to 4-5-1-1 while the Giants improve to 8-3-0-0 and leapfrog Kamloops in the standings for first place.

Following Saturday’s 7-5 barn burner against the Rockets, the Cougars were looking to correct a number of difference-makers from that tilt against the Giants come Monday. Most notably, ensuring their powerplay unit isn’t coughing up shorthanded goals.

While neither team capitalized on the powerplay – Prince George with five opportunities and Vancouver with four – the Cougars seemed to have corrected the mistakes made from Saturday’s game against Kelowna.

Taylor Gauthier got the start in net for the Cougars while Trent Miner manned the pipes for Vancouver.

Eric Florchuk scored the first of the game in the opening period. Justin Lies and Zack Ostapchuk tallied assists on the scoring play for the Giants as they took an early 1-0 lead 17:44 into the game.

In the second period, a lot of back and forth action between Vancouver and Prince George but neither team found twine.

The third period brought on a different storyline, however. 1:56 into the period, Hudson Thornton connected with Riley Heidt for what would be the Saskatoon-product’s second goal of the season. The assist by Thornton marked his third point in as many games since joining the Cougars’ cohort.

8:30 to go in the period, Justin Sourdif batted down a puck near the Cougars blueline, catching the Cats off guard as they departed the zone in transition. Tristen Nielsen gathered the puck along the boards before sending it to Adam Hall in the slot who sent it in past Gauthier for the go-ahead marker.

A wild final few moments as the Cougars dug in deep in an effort to knot things up, but the Giants stood tall on the effort of Trent Miner in net, saving 33 of the 34 shots he faced.

The 34 shots by the Cougars marked just the second time this season the Giants allowed 30 or more shots. The previous time happening in a 4-0 win over the Kamloops Blazers.

Prince George will have a few days off before they suit up again. They’ll be taking on the Kamloops Blazers on Thursday, April 22nd at 7:00 p.m.
