PRINCE GEORGE–The pandemic has made it difficult for many to enjoy their usual outdoor activities, especially for elders who are at most risk. But now, the Prince George Native Friendship is offering workshops and it’s attracting people that don’t normally attend them.

Their recreational halls are normally filled with dozens of seniors, but now it sits completely empty. However, the Friendship Center is finding ways to keep seniors active and able to interact with others. They’re hosting a birdhouse workshop next week, where seniors 55 and older will learn to paint and design birdhouses.

“It’s also a really neat way for elders to connect with each other even though its virtual and its kinda strange and foreign, it’s been working really well for us, we’re quite excited about it.” said Erin Anderlini, Health Director of the Friendship Center

It’s completely free and the supplies will be provided, and delivered to people’s homes. Elders will be provided a birdhouse, birdseed, paint, and a stencil kit.

Anderlini says they’ve done a few workshops already this year, including a cookie decorating and gardening workshops. She said people have shown a lot of interest in the workshops and they’re seeing people they don’t normally see attending.

“So before the pandemic, we were doing like field trips and gym orientations, and museum tours, and now that we’re virtual, we’re having elders in walkers and wheelchairs who would not have come out before who are now coming and meeting new people” said Anderlini.

She hopes that trend will continue after the pandemic

The workshop takes place next tuesday, and seniors can sign up by contacting the friendship center. Next month, they’ll be hosting another workshop to teach elders about scams and frauds to watch out for.

They plan on doing between one to two workshops every month until next March.
