VICTORIA — British Columbia’s Public Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry provided guidance for those waiting for their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine today.

She said while it’s preferable to stick with the same vaccine as your second dose, it’s still safe and effective to mix and match vaccines.

Due to the large supply of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines, she said those who received a first dose of Pfizer, will be able to receive a second dose of Pfizer.

If your first shot was Moderna, you will have to wait a few weeks due to “a spotty supply” of that vaccine, so you may have “to switch” to Pfizer. If you’d like to wait for a second Moderna shot rather than take a Pfizer shot, you can choose to wait for another dose of Moderna until more of those shots arrive.

For those who took the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine as their first dose, they will be able to choose which shot they receive next.

B.C. will be providing a second AstraZeneca shot eight weeks after the first shot. Henry says that this will be done through pharmacies and says they will start calling people to book appointments on Monday.

Henry announced 199 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. today, including six in the Northern Health region.

She said there are 2,563 active cases with 224 people in hospital, 62 of whom are in critical or intensive care.

Sadly two more deaths bringing B.C.’s death toll to 1,709.

Henry said 71.8 per cent of adults 18 and older have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 68.9 per cent of those aged 12 and older.
