Golf continues record-breaking numbers into second consecutive summer

According to Holmes, one of the other reasons why golf had seen such an increase, was the fact that it provided families with the perfect activity that they could do together.

“People are just enthused about golf. Golf was up about 25-percent last year and we’re on track to probably do that or even more this year. It seems to be like the hot sport for Covid, so there was a big increase and I think a lot of families are thinking this was a good opportunity to get out and do something together.”

With provincial restrictions continuing do loosen as the pandemic slows down, golf courses could see even more demand, as they are able to offer much more than they could last year.

“Lessons have been busy, we got our junior program off the ground again. We had to shut it down last year because of the Covid restrictions, so this year we can do small groups, we have our juniors every Monday and we’re full with that.”

For Jessey Church, Assistant Pro at Aberdeen Glen Golf Club, he’s used to his club being a destination golf course and with travel restrictions now no longer in place, he will begin to see golfers from all across the province once again.

“Now that it’s completely open provincial-wide, we’re really looking forward to bringing some guys up from down in the lower mainland. [We’re] hoping that they’ll make it up here and we can show off what the North has to offer.”

For anyone involved with the game of golf, there may not have been as good a time as there is right now.
