PRINCE GEORGE – As Dan Hamhuis enjoys his first full summer of retirement from the NHL, he does plan to be more involved with the Prince George Cougars next hockey season.

“I’m looking forward to being a little bit more present I suppose with the Cougars,” said Hamhuis.

From the moment Dan Hamhuis and Eric Brewer were announced as part of the Cougars new ownership group in 2014, the future for the pair, once they were finished playing themselves, seemed obvious.

“We would love for him to have a lot of time,” joked Brewer. “It’s all good, he’s got a great hockey mind and you can’t have enough of that with his experience and his high level of play.”

With both Brewer and Hamhuis done playing pro hockey officially, that future has come into fruition as Brewer steps into what he calls more of an advising role and while Hamhuis’ official role remains undetermined at this point, one thing is for sure.

Hamhuis will be around the CN Centre a lot more.

“I just look forward to being around more, to learn more, and spend more time watching games which I’ve never done before,” said Hamhuis.

After many years away from home, and away from his family, he said it’s time to enjoy birthdays, his kid’s sports, and skiing back in Smithers.

No matter what the role for Hamhuis looks like down the road the positive impact is already showing.

There are plenty of connections he and Brewer have across the hockey world, many have already started to show up in the organization.
