PRINCE GEORGE – According to Statistics Canada, Skin cancers are the most common of all cancers in Canada. This includes a type of skin cancer called melanoma.

” Sunburn can increase your risk of skin cancer basically, so that’s, with enough damage sort of repeated damage over the years it can develop into cancers. states Brett Chiasson from Third Avenue Pharmacy. ” The sun rays can you know the damage the DNA in our skin cells and that can lead to multiple mutations that can lead to skin cancers.”

The Canadian Cancer Society estimated 6,800 new cases of melanoma and 78,300 new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer in 2015. Based on Canadian and American surveys, 30% to 40% of adults use sunscreen.

” I generally recommend around an SPF 30 for most of the body and then maybe something a little higher on the face by an SPF 30 actually blocks about 95 to 97 percent of UVB rays. So that’s you know kind of covers most of it. But then you might want something a little [sic] more heavier for the face where you’re going to be getting repeated exposure regardless, so if you sort of intended to be in the sun that day. There are points in the day, where you are at high risk with sun exposure. It’s important to keep applying sunscreen and seek shade.” says Brett “I would say between noon and 3 p.m. generally, you know to get out in the sun in the morning then if you like doing stuff. Then maybe hide inside for the afternoon if you can avoid it right, and go back out there for the evening.
