PRINCE GEORGE — A 30-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries following an alleged carjacking north of Hixon late Sunday afternoon.

Prince George RCMP Cpl. Sonja Blom says it all started at 8:35 a.m. yesterday, when the 100 Mile House RCMP received a request to check the wellbeing of an adult male who was staying at a local hotel. She says officers attended, however the male had already left. Blom says a description of the vehicle was provided to police.

At around 4:30 p.m. that afternoon, Blom says a Quesnel RCMP officer saw the vehicle associated to the 100 Mile House wellbeing check request, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop with it. However she says the vehicle didn’t stop and was last seen heading northbound toward Prince George.

Shortly after 5 p.m., she says police received a report of a single-vehicle collision on Highway 97 near Camp Creek Road, south of Prince George. While frontline officers were en route to the collision, the Prince George RCMP received a report of a carjacking that had occurred on the north side of Hixon; the suspect had allegedly assaulted the owner of the vehicle before driving away in his car.

“Frontline officers and other emergency services attended the scene of the collision, where they determined that the vehicle involved was the car that had just been stolen, and the driver was the subject of the 100 Mile House check wellbeing request from that morning. Witnesses to the crash reported that the vehicle had been driving erratically prior to leaving the roadway and rolling over,” says Blom. “The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He was transported to hospital with life threatening injuries and has since been transferred to Vancouver for medical care. “

The investigation is ongoing and charges are being considered against the 30-year-old male driver, who is a former Prince George resident. Anyone with information regarding the carjacking or collision is asked to contact the Prince George RCMP at (250) 561-3300.
