Mandatory masks for K – 12

PRINCE GEORGE – Better add a healthy supply of face masks to your Back-to-School shopping.

That’s because the Ministry of Education and the Provincial Health Officer have mandated face masks inside schools for those in Grades Four to 12 as well as teachers and staff. Masks are encouraged for students in Kindergarten to Grade 3.

Not a surprise to School District 57 Trustee, Tim Bennett. But he also sees the mask-wearing as a temporary thing.

“As more and more of our students are going to get vaccinated with their second dose, I think masks are in place as that process starts up. And then public health and the ministry may get a better look at how transmission rates are in our schools come September with the Delta variant.”

The Ministry has also posted a list of exceptions:

*A person who cannot tolerate wearing a mask for health or behavioural reasons

*A person unable to put on or remove a mask without the assistance of another person

*If the mask is removed temporarily for the purposes of identifying the person wearing it

*If the mask is removed temporarily to engage in an educational activity that cannot be performed while wearing a mask. For example: Playing a wind instrument

*Engaging in high-intensity physical activity

*If a person is eating or drinking *If a person is behind a barrier

*While providing a service to a person with a disability or diverse ability (for example, a hearing impairment), where visual cues, facial expressions and/or lip reading/movements are important

Classes resume on September 7th.
