Video of dancing Vanderhoof RCMP officers goes viral

PRINCE GEORGE – Sometimes all you need is to dance it out. A video of two Vanderhoof RCMP officers went viral after they were stopped by a Prince George family and asked to bust a move, to help make their day a little better.

“It caught us off guard a little bit – as we were walking out she mentioned to us that her daughters were pretty intimidated by us in uniform. She asked if we were willing to put on a dance for her, and, well, you know what happened after that,” said Vanderhoof RCMP Cst. Steve.

Ada Madam and her family were traveling back from preparing fish for her late Father’s potlatch when they stopped for food at the 711 in Vanderhoof.

“We just needed some goodness in our life after all this hard work. I didn’t want to go home with scared children on the highway,” said Ada, who took the viral video.

Ada says that both she and her children at first felt uneasy around the officers due to past trauma and negative interactions with Police.

“Growing up as a Wet’suwet’en Mother and raising some Wet’suwet’en and Dakelh children, we’ve grown up with some apprehensions with seeing officers out in public, ” said Ada.

Both officers agreed that a part of their job is to connect with the community but they weren’t expecting to dance.

“It’s not uncommon that people approach [us] on the street with questions or concerns but I definitely was not expecting to be asked to dance on camera. But here we are and it was awesome,” said Vanderhoof RCMP Cst. Matt.

Cst. Steve added that they don’t mind making “a little bit of a fool of themselves just to make people laugh”.

“We want to bridge the gap between the police and the community. To be able to make them laugh after a tough year and a half, felt pretty good for us. We had no idea it would blow up like this,” added Cst. Steve.

The video has now been shared over 14.1k times online and has close to 600 positive comments.
