PRINCE GEORGE – Following the recent release of the School District 57 (SD57) Special Advisors report, Board of Education Chair Trent Derrick, and Vice-Chair Shuirose Valimohamed have announced their resignations.

Derrick announced his resignation by stating,

“As I have had time to reflect on the report from the special advisors, I can no longer be part of the Board of Education or a system that this report has shown to be Racist, a culture of fear and broken.”

SD57 Board of Education Vice-Chair Shuirose Valimohamed shared a similar statement about her resignation Monday morning stating,

“I can no longer be in an elected position if I cannot make change for the betterment of students in the district. I cannot keep conforming to SD 57 policies (which only apply to certain trustees and staff) when I know it’s wrong and unethical. I do not want to be a counterfeit person any longer.”

The recent special advisors report revealed systemic racism and systemic discrimination within not only SD57 but within BC’s Education System.

The report included over 40 recommendations to deal with what was called a “culture of fear” by special advisors.

Derrick was elected as Chair of the SD57 Board of Education on November 3rd, 2020.

Valimohamed and Derrick were first sworn in as School Board Trustees on November 6th, 2018.
