1st phase of supportive housing project starting to take shape, Ramsay says ‘we need more’

PRINCE GEORGE – The completion date is still months away, but a milestone was reached earlier this week when the first modules were put in place for the first phase of the supportive housing project downtown Prince George.

“This week what we’re seeing is construction crews craning in those individual pods, and they’re being stacked together right now,” says Laura Mathews, Communications Manager for BC Housing.

The first phase of the construction will provide 50 urgently needed, purpose-built supportive homes for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness

BC Housing says this phase will be complete in early 2022, with move-in dates for residents set for February 2022.

Although the 50 units are a welcome addition to the city and 100 more are expected in phase two, Councillor Cori Ramsay says we need more.

“We know that’s not going to be enough housing for our community,” says Ramsay.

Ramsay says many other options need to be looked at including no and low-barrier housing.

BC Housing did say other projects are also near completion including The National Hotel and Alibis Show Lounge which will re-open, but as a homeless shelter later this fall.
