Dec 23, 2021 | 6:28 AM

SMITHERS- The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako has issued an evacuation alert due to ice jams on the Bulkley River causing flooding in the Ebenezer Flats area. The district says there is a potential danger to life and health.

The alert encompasses from the corner of Viewmount Road N along the south side of Kidd Road to the end of Kidd Road and south along Viewmount Road N to the Bulkley River. It includes all the properties on Columbia Street, 22nd Avenue, and Bulkley Street.

Residents in the area should prepare to evacuate the area. RDBN says they will give as much notice as possible prior to evacuation, however, due to rapidly changing conditions, they may receive limited notice.

People can prepare for an evacuation order by taking the following steps:

  • locate all family members or co-workers and plan to meet outside the evacuation area, should an evacuation be called while separated;
  • gather essential items such as medications, eyeglasses, valuable papers (i.e. insurance), immediate care needs for dependants and, if you choose, keepsakes (photographs, etc.), have these items readily available for quick departure;
  • prepare to move any persons with mobility challenges and/or children;
  • moving pets and livestock to a safe area, if you require assistance please call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako;
  • arranging to transport your household members or co-workers in the event of an evacuation order. If you are asked to evacuate and need transportation assistance from the area please call the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako; and,
  • arrange accommodation for your family if possible.

In the event of an Evacuation Order, a Reception Centre will be opened if required. This Evacuation Alert replaces the Hazard Notice issued earlier this week.
